Counselor In Training
Leadership Camp
Grades 11-12
The Counselor In Training (CIT) program is a three-week intensive training aimed at preparing teens for the responsibilities of working with youth. As a CIT, participants spend their first two weeks learning about managing a cabin group through both leadership workshops and practical experience working with younger campers. CITs learn about working with children of different ages and abilities, how to create and manage positive group dynamics, and how to assist campers with behavior or adjustment issues. Finally, they serve a one-week apprenticeship as an assistant leader to an experienced staff member, which gives them a supervised opportunity to put their growing bag of tricks into action. It’s important to think of the CIT program like a first-time job; we help guide CITs through this working experience by providing constructive feedback and advice. Our goal is for CITs to become successful staff members while also gaining important skills for college and future careers, so participants should show up ready to learn and work hard. Countless Speers alumni tell us that CIT was their best summer of camp — and a great culmination of the Speers experience that led to incredible personal growth.
